Neurodegeneration and neuroinflamation

English

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) currently lacks a clear prognosis as to the clinical evolution on diagnosis.

Our multidisciplinary research group consisting aims to respond to the different challenges presented by MS, broaden our knowledge of the disease, and to transfer this knowledge to the society.

Strategic objectives

- To be the reference group in the province of Girona for research and teaching in multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases

- To have a national and international presence in the field of multiple sclerosis research

- Consolidating clinical research in multiple sclerosis

- To initiate and consolidate basic research in multiple sclerosis

- To promote and lead research into new treatments for multiple sclerosis

- To initiate clinical research in other neurodegenerative disorders (Parkinson's disease)

- Consolidating clinical research in hereditary ataxias

- Establish research collaborations with other national and international groups in multiple sclerosis

- Strengthening research in multiple sclerosis in nursing and neuropsychology

- To promote training and teaching in multiple sclerosis by health professionals, specialists and affected patients and families

Main lines of research

Clinical-assistance priority lines:

1. Study of neuropsychological disorders and cognitive rehabilitation in Multiple Sclerosis.

2. Study of the emotional impact, coping and adaptation to the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis

3. Study of fatigue in Multiple Sclerosis.

4. Improvement of the adherence to the immunomodulator treatment in Multiple Sclerosis.

5. Creation and use of a multi-parametric, multi-user and multi-functional database in Multiple Sclerosis.

6. Implementation of the use of electronic devices to assess disability in patients with Multiple Sclerosis

7. Application of new cranial MRI techniques as prognostic markers in Multiple Sclerosis.

8. Computerized systematization of lesions in cranial MRI in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Priority lines in basic research:

1. Study of specific miRNA profiles by different clinical forms and evolutions of Multiple Sclerosis

2. Study of the DNA methylation profile of patients with Multiple Sclerosis

3. Study of biomarkers of the evolution of cognitive function in patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Determination of biological factors (genetic and biochemical) of response to immunomodulatory treatments in Multiple Sclerosis.

5. DNA, CSF and serum sample bank of neuroimmunological diseases.
